Feds sue three biggest credit card companies, settle with MC and Visa

http://www.herald-dispatch.com/business/x1418593921/Feds-sue-three-biggest-credit-card-companies-settle-with-MC-and-Visa

The Justice Department on Monday sued the three largest U.S. credit card companies for anticompetitive practices and reached a proposed settlement with two of them, MasterCard and Visa.

"We want to put more money in consumers' pockets, and by eliminating credit card companies' anticompetitive rules, we will accomplish exactly that," Attorney General Eric Holder told an afternoon news conference. "The companies put merchants and their customers in a no-win situation" and "consumers are being held hostage."

In papers filed in federal court in Brooklyn, the department and various state attorneys general sued all three companies, saying they were attempting to insulate themselves from competition.

At the same time, the Justice Department filed a settlement it has reached with Visa and MasterCard. Court approval of such settlements is usually a formality.

Under the settlement, Visa and MasterCard agree not to prohibit merchants from offering customers discounts or rebates for using a particular kind of card. Visa and MasterCard also must allow merchants to express preferences for the use of a low-cost card within a network or other form of payment.

The lawsuit says the card companies are impeding merchants from promoting the use of competing credit or charge cards with lower acceptance fees.

Each time consumers use a credit card to make a purchase, the merchant must pay a fee. Such fees brought in $35 billion last year to the three credit card companies and their affiliated banks.

"We're partway there" with the proposed agreement with Visa and MasterCard, Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney, head of the department's antitrust division, told the news conference.

"We remain open" to seek a settlement with American Express," Varney added.

Shares of American Express closed at $39.05, down more than 6 percent; Mastercard ended at $222.64 down less than 1 percentage point, and Visa was down for the day at $73.24, losing less than a quarter percentage point.

Joining the lawsuit were state attorneys general from Maryland, Connecticut, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Texas.

I settled with another company for American Express

In April, I entered into a settlement agreement with American Express through the law offices of Mann Bracken LLP. I agreed to a $5,000 payment in April and two more payments of $338.89. I made these payments and the debt was settled. I have a copy of the agreement which states that after those payment, "You will be released from further obligation in this matter." In July I started getting phone calls from AEGIS Recieveables in Irving, Texas (I don't think the calls came from there the callers could barely speak English, sounded Palistian, or something to that effect) I first mailed a copy of this agreement to them and then last week faxed them a copy. They will not stop calling and are rude and tell me they haven't recieved anything. Today they called 7 times in a row and would not stop calling. I was not home and the friend who answered told them so, but they would not stop. I took the last 2 calls when I got home and told them I had filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (I did last night) and that I did not intend to put up with their harrasement. Apparently American Express is trying to collect more, this company got this in July. So I fault them as well. I entered into a legaly binding agreement with them through their lawyers and fulfilled my side of things. They are still trying to get more out of me and will not. I dare them to take me to court!

Bibit Internet Payments Unauthorized American Express Charges BUNNICK

Had 2 unauthorized charges from BIBIT on my AMEX.

meetic.com - 59.93
Parship GmbH - 42.90

Both, I guess are dating websites. I contacted AMEX this morning and had them issue me a new card and dispute the charges. The Parship charge appears to be a monthly subscription.

With all the fraud around BIBIT I am surprised that AMEX isnt shutting them down from using their cards.

EDitor's Suggestions on how to get your money back! HERE IS WHAT RIP-OFF REPORT SUGGESTS YOU DO: Go to your bank within 60 days of the charge, or as soon as you know about the charge, don't delay, and tell them that there has been fraudulent activity within your account. Explain that you wish to file a dispute, and demand that they assist you in accordance with Federal Regulation E. According to the majority of victims interviewed by Rip-off Report, those who immediately called their banks to dispute the charges did not get very far. Many victims got the following responses from their banks: “we could not do anything for you” or “you waited too long; it has been more than 60 days”. If the bank is says that you have waited too long, explain to them how you called their 800 number as soon as the charges were found, and were told by the bank that nothing could be done. Remind the bank that they failed to assist you properly at the 800 #, and instead, provided you with an inadequate explanation of your right to dispute. Tell the bank that it's their fault time has expired, and since they gave you the wrong info to begin with, they will just have to deal with it, take the loss and reverse the charges. Tell them the truth; this was unauthorized and your account was NOT to be charged! Keep emphasizing how you never authorized anything! Direct them to the hundreds of victims reports that were filed on Rip-off Report.com. And if you're at the bank, walk them over to their computer and make them go to this site! If you are on the phone with them, tell them you will wait while they access this site! Either way, be persistent! DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER! Let them know nicely, that you were advised to Report them (the Bank) and this situation to the Banking Commission in your state. Since each state has a different name for the agency/controller over banks, find that name before you call or get to the bank so you can throw it in their face. The more knowledgeable you appear to be, the further you will get. And just continue to demand the Federal Regulation E form! The bank CAN, MUST and WILL reverse the charge! But, you must be persistent; ask to speak to the supervisor or the area manager for all the branches in the state. Let the bank personnel know you are meeting with the media later in the day, that you would much rather they do the right thing (as most other banks have) by looking at the complaints and immediately reversing the charge(s) to your account; no matter how long ago it was. Be sure to call the Media if necessary so you are telling the truth. If you have to, be loud (but nice) in front of other customers. If you are just calling by phone, the above tactics should still work. The bank can easily fax or mail to you the Federal Regulation E dispute form. CHARGES TO YOUR CREDIT CARD If the charge was to your credit card (not debit card, check card, or checking account), contact the credit card company as soon as possible to request a dispute form. Consumers usually have a little longer to dispute fraudulent credit card charges (up to 6 months), but it is better to act right away. In this type of situation, credit card disputes are usually successful since fraudulent companies often won't contest the disputed charge. In rare cases, credit card companies will review disputes, but refuse to reverse the charges. If this occurs, complain to a manager and let them know you will be filing a report here. Remember… Don't let them get away with it! Make sure they make the Rip-off Report .. The more Reports filed on a Company or individual, the more likely it is that the authorities, media and attorneys will want to take action. And good luck… Let us know how you do! AMEX should file charges Fradulant charges! redding,

There is evidence that this company BIBIT internet payments is running a scam and fradulantly charging AMEX customers with bogus charges.

Why dosen't AMEX do an investigation and put them out of business?? How many complaints do they have to get? How many customers accounts do they have to cancel?

AMERICAN EXPRESS closes my card the minute I pay it off

I had 2 accounts with American Express-one which I never even activated the card for. The other, I charged a rental car to a year ago in an emergency (that's what I have credit cards for-emergencies), and was expecting a low interest rate, and to pay it off soon. My interest rate went through the roof because my "debt to credit ratio" was too high-I was paying off all my cards, including Am. Ex. I was not in default for any of them. They were just too close to their limits.

Over the past year, I have paid 5000 dollars for a 1500 dollar charge to American Express. I have been trying to get my credit in shape, and the NUMBER ONE thing that I needed to do was pay off debts so that my credit/debt ratio would be wider.

I paid off American Express in Aug 2009; In September they contacted me by mail to let me know that BOTH of my accounts were closed. Their reasons were-debt/credit ratio, and delinquencies on other cards. I am not delinquent on ANY debt! I contacted the credit bureau, disputed items, and they were removed. I then contacted American Express, who explained to me that, although I had no delinquencies, my...again...debt to credit ratio was too high.

WELL OF COURSE IT IS IF EVERY TIME I PAY SOMETHING OFF THE ACCOUNT IS CANCELED.

I truly believe that they left the account open only because I was making large payments on it, and they new that if they closed it before it was paid off I'd pay minimums and no more-in fact, at this point, I might as well have gone into default for all the good paying it off did me. What else explains the timing of their closing the account? According to all three credit bureaus, they have checked my score and report bi-monthly as long as I have had the card. Why did they suddenly decide that what they saw was unacceptable-in a month during which my score had jumped nearly 100 points?

The only explanation is that, in an economy where many people are defaulting on debt, they kept it open as a "dangling carrot" to get me to pay it off, and then closed it as soon as they had their money. My credit report shows that it was closed at their request, and the jump that happened in my score before has been lost and then some.

My credit score is meant to reflect how likely I am to pay off debts-but it would be better if I hadn't paid it off! I understand that credit is abusiness, not a public service-but it my tax money is going to "bail out" these jokers, then there should at least be some oversight into how badly they are allowed to screw me.

I paid off two other cards, and the same thing happened. I paid a third one down, and they lowered my limit to just above what I paid down to. Watch out-they're worse than ever.

AMERICAN EXPRESS AMEX AMEX-LONGTIME CLIENT, GOOD SPENDER PAYER CARD HOLDER NO MORE!!

We all going thru difficult times. Even the financial institutions who asked our tax money to survive. I have been AMEX client for over 15 years. Had corporate cards, personal cards, at one point spent almost 10k in one month and paid it. I paid almost 7K to settle some of my balances. left two out because of financial difficutlies. I had to go thru a Debt Management program (note: not same as debt consolidation) where i will pay my small 4k balance BUT at a reduced interest rate instead of the 25% they required. I had asked if they would renegotiate/lower the interest but cold shoulder so i had no alternative but to work with DM Program and voala! they got me a reduced rate! now, all other cards I had with zero balance, they cancelled them, becuase according to them 'i indicated i am unable to pay'. I sent them a letter asking to review my records, i have reduced my overall debt by almost 50% in last two months (almost 40k) and still got penalized for asking help to a non-profit organization to help me get out of debt faster. Too bad, I encourage all similar to my situation to seek debt management program (non profit BBB certified) so you can get rid of this 'extorsion'. I'm sick and tired of seeing big banks asking for OUR money and we still getting screwed by the system becuase they are allowed and they can!

American Express AMEX Chris Bown AWSM Technology Owner Now Working for American Express, BEWARE!

I was looking on the Internet recently searching: “AWSM Technology” and I found Christopher Bown’s resume. I am a victim of AWSM Technology who was taken for thousands of dollars. Christopher Bown was one of the partners of AWSM Technology. I see now that he’s working for American Express. I wonder if AMEX knows that they have a criminal working for them?

AWSM Technology took millions of dollars from their victims between 2005 – 2007. Christopher Bown was the Chief Technology Officer and Partner in this venture. AWSM took me for almost ten thousand dollars by promising first page ranking on the search engines with their “AWSM technology”. This “technology” was nothing but a simple website.

The scam was they the victims were sold a site for a few hundred dollars. They were then assigned to an Ad Director who was little more than an out of work car salesman. The Ad Director’s job was to obtain more money from the mark by any means necessary. This included lying about the service, browbeating and other forms of abuse.

Not only did the sites never actually work right but they were poorly made too. I waited almost five months for all of my sites to be completed. During that whole time I received countless calls from my Ad Director demanding more money. I spent almost $10,000.00 on two, poorly built, sites that have never made me a dime.

Mr. Bown has obviously seen how his name comes up on the Internet in association with AWSM Technology. Recently, he has taken measures to disassociate himself from that name. He has removed it from his resume.

This is what Bown did, AWSM Technology used to be named Ad Foresight. He has removed the AWSM name from his resume and now refers to that experience as being from AD Foresight; AWSM’s old name.

AWSM then changed their name again to SearchMarketing. As you can see, Bown has that down as an experience on his resume. AD Foresight/AWSM Technology/SearchMarketing are the SAME company under three different names!

Right now, AWSM Technology is part of a Class Action Lawsuit. Here are some details about that which are public record:

Filed with American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) on behalf of Frank Stokes, but submitted as a potential “class arbitration” (i.e., class action).

• AAA Case No.: 11-147-002374-06

• Styled as: Stokes v. AWSM Technology, LLC

Arbitrator: Brendan N. Hare

Details:

**In an Order dated June 22, 2007, the Arbitrator ruled in favor of Frank Stokes on Clause Construction issue. Specifically, the Arbitrator found that “the arbitration clause in question permits the arbitration to proceed on behalf of a class.” A copy of the Order (called a “Clause Construction Award”) can be downloaded by clicking here.**

**Pursuant to AAA rules, the case will now be stayed for 30 days (until July 23, 2007) to allow for any appeal of the Arbitrator’s decision. After that, the case will proceed to the Class Determination Phase.**

Back to my experience with AWSM, in 2007 I was contacted about a seminar at AWSM’s Headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona to teach me to run my sites. I attended this seminar and met Mr. Bown who was introduced to me as one of the owners. This seminar was little more then a clever sales pitch designed to get us all in a room so their Ad Directors could work on us to buy even more worthless services.

Shortly after this, AWSM Technology went out of business; they closed their doors. Soon after, I began getting calls from Searchmarketing saying that they had taken over the AWSM Accounts and would now *finally* show me how to make money with these sites. Of course it cost even more money to get started.

Disgusted, I finally quit AWSM and joined the Class Action Lawsuit. I am wondering if Chris Bown was truthful with American Express when he interviewed with them? Did he tell them that he was on the run from a company that scammed millions out of people? Does American Express know Mr. Bown’s history?

I am posting Bown’s resume below this and below that I am posting some things that other people have written about AWSM Technology. Look at Bown’s resume and see how the words “AWSM Technology” have been removed from it.

AMERICAN EXPRESS Accepted Fake Paperwork and Claims from "Merchant" I had no dealings with Internet

American Express accepted fake paperwork and false statements from a merchant I have never done business with and stuck me with $20,000 in charges. Unbelievable. The "merchant" told American Express they'd give me a "credit!" Unbelievable. Why would I want a fake "credit" with a "merchant" who I have never done business with and a dishonest one at that? Not even in or near my city, by the way. Again, unbelievable. I can't believe people can get away with stuff like this. Oh, and AmEx sued me for it, even after my attorney requested "time." Thank you American Express.

American Express - Travellers Cheques Useless in Europe New York, New York

I settled a B&B bill in Belgium this summer with American Express Travellers Cheques in Euros. The wife of the owner didn't know what her husband (a bank office in Belgium) told me later, by e-mail. No bank in Belgium will redeem these cheques. Another of my "victims" found out for me that Travelex would cash them, so off I went to the nearest city with a Travelex outlet. They wanted 7% commission! I was subsequently able to do a bank transfer to my victims who returned the cheques to me. All this involved considerable time taken from my vacation.

I understand that similar conditions exist throughout the European Community. While the American Express website states that a commission may apply when redeeming their cheques, for some strange reason they don't tell you just how high the rate may be at exchangers they list on their web site.

American Express refused to refund my full costs. To the credit of the vendor of my bank, the local branch of TD Canada Trust, I received a full refund.

American Express raised intrest rates without informing me and with no reason

American Express raised my rate from 10.25% to 17.25% with out an opt out option or with no notice. I have good credit, have never paid them or any of my other cards late and I have good credit!!! They raised it for NO REASON and didn't give me an out!!! This should be illegal now not in a few weeks or months!!!

American Express AMX Rep admitted profiling for intrest and fee rates Los Angeles, California

I just got off the phone with a "supervisor" from AMX. I was told that customers were profiled for the rates they where being charged. This person refued to give their name, but apperantly screwed up, giving me this information. I was being recorded by them, I was told this when I asked them. When I told them I was recording them they ask me to stop and would no longer answer my questions or give me their name. I asked if profile was done by race, finical ability and residence location. They would not answer directly, but indicated this may be the case. They have alot to hide.

American Express Didn't honor deal - cut onboard credit Lake Mary,

Cruises-N-More did not honor their deal, cutting the onboard credit (OBC) from $205 to $138. I gave them multiple opportunities to make good on the $67 both before and after the cruise but they refused.

I requested a quote for a cruise using the CruiseCompete website. In my request for quotes, I specified the coupons and discounts I intended to use. Here is what I wrote in my request:

PLEASE NOTE - intend to use 50,000 RCCL Visa points ($500 off cruise), have a NextCruise already booked with $200 down (and possibly $100 OBC), eligible for Diamond balcony discount of $200. Wish to use best combination of discounts to secure lowest final price.

Here is what Cruises-N-More wrote in their offer:

BIG BONUS: Every booking comes with a $205 and $205 OBC for Balcony and D2 port rear cabins respectively. Which can be used for drinks, tips, shore excursions and more. Also pay a 50% Reduced Deposit. We are the only Cruise Compete Agency that has the BEST PRICE PROMISE. Call for details!

Ultimately, I used the 50,000 RCCL Visa points and the $200 Diamond balcony discount. Once I used the discounts, Cruises-N-More informed me that they would only give me a $138 OBC due to the reduction in cruise fare because I used the discounts - the very discounts I specified in my request for quote.

Multiple calls, and talks with a supervisor only got me a few coupons, worth maybe $5 - not nearly the $67 they took from me. I gave them multiple opportunities to fix this but they refused. They did not even respond to my last request.

Be warned!!! Cruises-N-More will not honor their offers and will offer little or no resolution. I highly recommend using a different travel agency. I have used others in the past and have never been cheated like this. Stay away from Cruises-N-More!

American Express AMEX Amex Outrageous, Customer Ripoff, Loan Sharks Toledo, Ohio

I am an elderly female and have been an American Express card holder (blue and green cards) for more than 25 years. On the green card, without my knowledge, American Express started moving any amount charged over $200 to Sign and Travel which quickly increased my monthly balance. On the blue card, they recently sent me a letter telling me that my interest rate would increase substantially beginning in January. I attempted to call American Express Corporate Office only to be told that they would be increasing all customer interest rates and it was absolutely nothing that I could do. I cancelled my American Express cards, will make monthly payments to the best of my ability since I am now on fixed income. This is very unfortunate and I am posting this so that others can avoid the American Express trap as it will ruin your credit. I have had excellent credit until now. Cancel your American Express Cards immediately to save your credit.

I thought I would have to lose my Membership Reward points but my daughter helped me figure out a way to get a few items because the books they send to me (Membership Reward Express 2009 Guide) require a lot of points to get an item (except gift cards). She obviously receives a different book. Get out while you can, American Express is going to ruin my credit.

AMERICAN EXPRESS "Committed to their relationship with me"

American Express first raised my interest rate to 27% so I paid the balance of $12,000. off. Now after charging $300.00 they lowered my credit limit from $12,000. to $1,000. This is my business card! I won't use them again. It's a good thing they are so "committed to our relationship".

American Express Ruined my credit score Ft. Lauderdale , Florida

I ran into a cash flow problem last february. ..So I called American Express to see what my options were. They set me up on their care program for 12 months. the only payment I missed was the one they were going to take out online for but never did. On the noticed they sent me it said to ignore the regular billing invoice. I called them when I saw on my statement my bill was over due. The person I talked to said again to ignore the bill. Recently I went to apply for a mortgage on a house I was thinking of purchasing. The bank said I was declined because of my credit report. American Express made the report that I was shutoff and paid zero money back. It put me below the 620 score I needed to get the mortgage. I was planing to pay them off with this refinance. They screwed my and them with this credit report. I called them about it and after 3hrs of being sent from one department to another I gave up. One department does not talk to the other. They are one big out of controll credit card company. What pisses me off the most is my tax dollars bailed them out....And they were suppose to help the consumers with this money. YEAH RIGHT!!!! I would have been better off filling bankrupcy or go to a Consumer Credit Settlement and giving them pennies on the dollar. My Advice to any one out there is DO NOT GO ON THE AMERICAN EXPRESS CARE PROGRAM!!!!!

American Express Left us stranded in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Internet

On a recent trip to Puerto Vallarta we had arrangements through our travel service for American Express to provide transfers to and form the airport and hotel. They were not at the airport. after much searching, with young kids in tow, we found the sign that the person should have been holding. I later contacted our travel agent who in turn contacted them and they said they had been trying to get hold of us. Not! On the way back, they showed up late which might have been okay except I was nervous after my earlier experience. Even though they knew there were 5 of us with luggage they told us we need to take 2 different taxis. I got in one with my son who began crying because we were splitting up. As we were pulling out 2 minivan taxis pulled up. My wife and 2 other children pulled up at the airport after us in a minivan which would have held us all! My recommendation, do not use American Express for travel.

American Express Purchase Protection Plan is a scam Golden, Colorado

You might have seen the television commercials that American Express has been playing lately stating that if your recent purchases are lost or stolen they will reimburse you the amount you payed for the items, trust me, it really is to good to be true.

When my house was burglarized last month we were lucky enough not to get hurt and didn't have anything too major stolen, just some electronics that were worth about $500. The burglar(s) entered my home after I let the dog out, and in the ten minutes the dog was outside the door was unlocked.

The next day a police report was filed and I now have a security system installed in my home. Some of the items that were stolen I purchased with my American Express card. I went online, read about this Purchase Protection Plan, and called them up to file a claim. The nice woman on the phone sent me all the paperwork, told me I needed to send a copy of this and that (37 pages later) and after 14 days I would be refunded the money.

I was ecstatic about being reimbursed and told almost everyone I knew about this program and how great American Express is to their customers. After all I have had this card since I turned 18 and have never missed or been late on a payment in all that time. A few days later, I got a letter in the mail saying my claim was declined because the police report did not show signs of "forced entry". After, I read through the entire Purchase Protect Plan discloser and the only thing it says in it about items that were stolen is, "a police report must be filed with your local police agency". It says nothing about signs of forced entry.

Now I understand people in this world probably do fill out false claims in order to make a few dollars, but this was a legitimate claim. The letter makes it sound like they think I made the whole thing up, using the phrase, the items "mysteriously disappeared". There was nothing mysterious about it, it was there when I went to bed, someone came in, stole it, and it wasn't there when I woke up.

I was a bit angry about the letter so I sent one of my own, and I also sent a copy of my newly installed security system agreement. I asked that my claim be given a second look because the reason it was decline was not supported in their Purchase Protection Plan disclosers.

I got a response letter back yesterday, they did give my claim a second look but declined it once again and said basically the same thing but this time added, "the items are not covered because when the items were stolen they were left unlocked and in public site". Can someone explain to me how something hooked up inside my house is in public site? And the items were not unlocked, my house was.

I can see that I am getting no where with this company, and they are choosing to deny my claim just because they can, they can't seem to give my a legitimate reason why, or show me where in their disclosers it states these things. I guess they think that the only way people get robbed it's by someone breaking a window or kicking down a door.

I guess they would have preferred someone came in with a gun and shot me in the face or stabbed me in the arm. But then they probably would have required me to send a picture of the stab wound, then they would deny the claim anyway because the cut wasn't big enough or they would have had to hit an artery or something crazy like that.

Well, rest assured American Express, as soon as my tax refund comes in, you will be paid off and I will be breaking up with you, no more love notes, no more phone calls. You charged me too much interest anyway

American Express Removed funds from my account and can not account for it. New York, New York

As a matter of corporate policy applied to all customers, American Express claims they are required to remove from customer accounts any funds that have remained in the account for more than six months. They move the customer's funds to an American Express corporate account and mail the customer a check via the postal service. The check is valid for 120 days. If the check expires un-cashed, Amex does not (or in my case, did not) put the funds back into the customer's account, even when the customer requests.

American Express will notify the customer about this expired credit refund check by sending a letter via the postal service and calling the customers telephone number.

Apparently, American Express will not (or in my case, did not) voluntarily disclose the existence of these un-cashed checks when the customer contacts customer service by telephone to discuss account status. Also, American Express will not (or in my case, did not) notify the customer of these checks through the web based message service available when the customer logs into their account online via the internet.

After five years American Express claims they are obligated to turn over these funds to the state. The state (New York State Comptrollers Office of Unclaimed Funds, in this case) claims they have no record of these funds.

Since American Express has millions of customers and applies these policies to all accounts, I may not be the only victim of these policies. Ask the NYSOUF how much money Amex claims their customers abandon each year. Add in the other 49 states and multiply times the number of years Amex has been doing this. My guess: $5 billion.

For my account: Estimate $70,000.00 over 28 years. I lived in locations where mail service was not reliable, so I often did not get statements or refund checks. I did manage to recover $12,000, and identify another $10,000 before they closed and deleted my account records.

In my opinion, Amex could have and should have returned the funds to my account.
Since the NYSOUF claims they did not get the funds, Amex is liable for either failing to meet the reporting requirements, or failing to turn over the funds.

I / we need help with this.

American Express Amex Lowered my Credit Limit, Negative Impact on my Credit Score El Paso Texas

After being a "member" for over 4 years with NO late payments to American Express or any of my other creditors I suddenly receive a notice from them that they are lowering my credit limit from $7500 to $4700. This was right above my $4500 balance. I called and was given crap about the ratio of my payments to balance was to low. I complained that my payments were in excess of the "minimum" payment due and that I was not late with them or any other creditor so this wa unfair. If the wanted me to pay more, why not make the minimum payment more? No answer. Sorry m'am. Then 3 months later they lower it AGAIN to $4300. WHAT????? I didn't pay enough in 3 months. Then go figure, I up my payments to almost 4 x's the minimum, but STILL that is not enough because 6 months later, they lower my limit again. They say that I'm not paying enough to them, and now, not enough to my other creditors!. They say my balance to credit limit ratio is too high. Well I guess so if you keep lowering my limit to bring it within a couple of hundred dollars if my limit. If I wanted a CHARGE card (the regular AMEX that you pay in full at the end of each cycle) I would have one. In fact I did have the gold card, I closed that account because of this nonsense. This is a credit card (Amex Blue), in which you are allowed to carry a balance. All of this is a game, and I'm through with them. I am going to move the balance and keep the account open so that I have 100% of my limit available. I also filed a complaint with the BBB about this fradulent practice and if this has happened to you, you should too!

AMEXVIP SUBSCRIPTIONS American Express charges me for magazine I never ordered. STAMFORD, Connecticut

A $26.50 charge showed up on my American Express card from AMEXVIP subscriptions. For Muscle and Fitness magazine. Never ordered it. Called 800 # to cancel. Tricky phone maze they put you through almost impossible to cancel - finally I get through the tricks and they say they are giving me an 8 dollar and change refund! So I file a dispute via the regular Amex 800 #. One hour invested. We'll see if the charge is removed.

Amex card will be cancelled. Another great reason to pay with good old cash - these credit card companies are corrupt - - you probably can't hear the tricky immoral phone maze they put you through unless you are cancelling but for the record the number is 800 774 7746. All automated.

American Express. Shame on you.

American Express And Delta Sky Miles Delta Skymiles American Express Ripping Off Consumers Internet

My husband and I had a Line-of-Credit with American Express Delta Sky Miles. Due tot he econonly, we ran up a large balance. Last year AMEX raised our interest rate from 9% to 30% (we never even made a late payment). We decided to pay it off and closed the account so we could not use it. I called the company and asked for a break in the interest and/or payments in an effort get it paid off, only to be told "no". Last month we finally made what we thought we be out last payment (a very large payment too and two weeks before the due date) only to receive a statement this month stating that we still owed $95 in accrued interest! I called AMEX and asked for them to write-off the interest since we had been so good about paying on the account and was told "no" that we owed it. I wonder how we will ever get this account paid off since interest accrues daily? What a rip-off they are doing to the consumers! Do use American Express ever - they do not care about the consumer!

J.L.E. Enterprises, Inc, Chuck Rockford, American Express Crooks from the word go

Crooks from the word go !!!

JLE-Enterprises.com purchased a full truck load (792 cases) of merchandise from me on June 1st and after selling it off the filed for a full refund from American express on December 20th. they first claimed 20 cases were missing, so I refunded them the cost of the 20 cases. Now they want it all back, claiming that the merchandise was not as described. Now American express has taken the money back without even asking my side of the deal.

BEWARE OF THESE CROOKS !!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

AMEX RIPS OFF SENIOR CITIZENS by TELEMARKETING THOSE who cant HEAR New York, New York

Elderly People need to be "on guard" from calls from American Express. THey had been contacting my 85 year old father who is hard of hearing and soliciting him by telephone to buy Leisure Books, Travel Books Airbill books at OUTRAGEOUS prices and my father did not know he was ordering anything.

These telemarketers are trained to talk to elderly people and even when people respond they cannot hear them if the elderly person even utters the word uh huh that is considered as a "yes" to charge the people.

All these charges from AE T& L started appearing on my fathers bill & he didn't know what they were for . AMEX was charging him a 55.00 yearly subscription to a travel & Liesure club. Plus they tried to charge Books for an AIRBILL subscription for flights to the west Coast? Huh? My Dad hasn't been on a plane since 9-11 occurred. What does he need that for?

The telemarketing didn't stop until I became the contact person on the account & I informed them that I was a Federal Investigator for the Government. Then all of a sudden the craziness on his account STOPPED.

If this is how they treat the elderly cardmembers then my father doesn't need to have a Credit Card company that is constantly berating him with offers and then put things on bills & the CSR who answer the phones act like they don't know who is charging these amounts. It is AMEX on in house subscriber services department !!!
This is insanity... is this why we bailed out the banks? American Express is one of those corporations we bailed out too. I want to inform Sen Schumer in NY that we need some Financial Reforms on these Bankers and Credit card companies
.

RIP OFF BY PARTNERS OF AMERICAN EXPRESS AND DELTA AIRLINES MILAGE PROGRAM Richland, Michigan

I just booked (as we have used our Award points for years for Air travel) a flight from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Los Angeles using my old Visa card (use to be by North West Airlines) for a flight on Delta Airlines flt #2819 thru Minn, Minn on June 4th. The amount of Award points used thru my old card cost me 20,000 points for round trip coming back on Flt#2068 on Tuesday June 8th.

I tried booking the same ticket on my American Express / Delta air card and they were asking 40,000 points for the same exact ticket.

Delta and American Express is ripping off the Consumer and all their customers for the same Dollar for points redemption program. I also tried booking Two tickets way out in October for the Same exact flight and that was also 40,000.

I just spoke to Delta customer service who was rude and did not care or put me thru to a supervisor, as they should have.

Let everyone know, the American Express Card is a Rip as since I started using it again since the merger of North West and Delta Air - I have found the same old complaint. Hotels and Resturants and other services who will not accept it. SO you have to carry your Visa to cover yourself when this happens. I am telling Everyone to Drop American Express as they are screwing the user for twice the points to get award travel. I have it all documented as of today April 25 - 2010. I told them the card being put to rest. Will see if their marketing is as good as they claim.

Please pass the word. The points program is a complete rip off. PJ

American Express Amex, Amex Blue, American Express Blue raised my interest rate

American Express raised the interest rate on my account (and NOT due to a default) without sending me written notice. When I found out the rate had been increased from 9.99 to 12.99 I contacted them and was told the rate was increased due to "market conditions
". I immediately closed my account. Four months later, they raised my rate again, this time to 15.24%. I immediately contacted American Express and demanded my rate be returned to the rate in effect at the time I closed my account. The supervisor I spoke to said she had talked to her manager about the issue and was not able to reduce the rate. American Express believes they can raise the interest rate on their cutomers at any time and for any reason and we have no ability to opt out of those changes

I asked her for copies of the card agreement in effect at the time I closed my account but after numerous phone calls and e-mails, I received four separate faxes, none of which contained any terms relating to interest rate increases.

I have filed a complaint with the FTC. I encourage anyone else who has had this happen to them to do the same. If the FTC receives enough complaints they will take action.

AMERICAN EXPRESS Not exactly a ripoff, but a warning to others. Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

I have been unemployed for a year while caring for my ill daughter. Despite my best efforts I have been unable to find much work that I can do from home. Then, out of the blue, my old employer offered me work via telecommuting. Yay! I needed a new computer to handle the large files I have to process, so I took my last $800 from savings and made a large payment to my American Express card. The card pays 1% of purchases toward a savings account (every little bit helps). I transferred the money over the phone. By the time I got to Best Buy (later that day) my credit limit had been reduced to within a few dollars of my new, lower balance! I sent off a quick email to AmEx, explained the issue and asked them to reconsider. I have had that account for 5 years, have never gone over the limit, and always paid on time, and paid more than the minimum. Their excuse was "my poor credit". Well, the only bad thing on my credit report is that my house is going into foreclosure. It just can't be helped. But I've managed to keep current on all other debts. I sent another email, and explained that, thanks to them, I had just reached the end of my rope and was going to file bankruptcy. Frankly, it's a relief.

Today, (9 days later) I received a call from a collection agency who said they were representing AmEx and wanting me to make payment arragements. Apparently, AmEx closed my account. I guess I'm not really surprised. Perhaps it was the comment I made about their underwriters cowering under the desks trying to figure out how they could justify screwing someone who paid their bill every month. Not sure...

In any event, the Indian woman used up 38 of my "day" minutes (which are NOT unlimited) trying to convince me I needed to accept one of three offers - immediate payoff of a lesser amount, a 12-month payment plan, or monthly payment arrangements. I told her I wasn't ready to make that decision and she should send me something in writing. No can do. I was supposed to take her word for it that the "letter of satisfactory payoff" would be forthcoming, and that my credit report would remain untarnished. I told her I would make my normal monthly payment on the 1st (as always). Note - I am NOT behind on my payment, and she did acknowledge that. But she demanded an immediate payment in "whatever amount I could handle. I told her I didn't have it because I don't have a job. So then she asks, "Well, if you're unemployed, how are you going to make the payment on the first?" I told her that wasn't her concern and then things got uglier. It obviously wasn't going to be resolved so I eventually hung up on her. I tried really hard to be polite, right up then.

I wish I knew the name of that company - National something...

Just wanted to warn others that AmEx is screwing people too. I understand they have a legal right to lower my limit and close the account at will. But to sic these collection people on me was uncalled for. I know that eventually things will turn around for me and that I will once again be in a financially stable position. Guess who won't be getting my business?

American Express - Travellers Cheques Refund Refusal (almost 2 years) Salt Lake City, Utah

After living 7 years in the USA I moved back to Brazil (May 2008) and used part of my savings to buy Traveller's cheques, thinking: "they are the safest way to carry my money". Well, it turned out that, during the move, they disappeared. I called AMEX and reported the loss when I was still at the airport (in the USA), but had the feeling they could be in one of the bags I had checked in. When I arrived in Brazil I realized they were nowhere to be found.

I have provided ALL the documents and information they requested and it's been almost 2 years and they keep e-mailing me the same answer: your claim hasn't been finalized yet.

I understand it's a large amount of money (20,000.00), but I was able to provide a good explanation about the origin of the money and the reason why I was carrying it. Anyways, it's my money and I trusted this company to carry it for me. I don't think the cheques have been stolen, because, according to them, nobody has tried to cash them. I think I misplaced them, because I left many things behind, when I moved, and, at this point, they were all thrown away.

I don't understand why they can't put a stop payment on them. Sounds like it's intentional, to cases like mine.

They are wearing me out. I don't know what else to do.

AMERICAN EXPRESS Fraudulent billing of AEPC Member Services Internet

Problem just happened to me. I use few credit cards normally. I stopped using American Express several years ago when something similar to this happened. In fact the credit card I possess still has the activation label on it. Out of the clear blue I get a bill with one item on it for $79.95 itemized as AEPC Member Services for T+L Family Club. Not knowing what AEPC was, I went to the internet and found others complaining about the same thing on Ripoff Report.

Personally, I don't care how it got on my bill whether I acted or didn't act on some junk mail. Unless it was a bill from American Express I was not going to see it. Slimy practices like this needs to be broadcasted to the world to put a stop to wrong doing and set some penalties for the unscrupulous.

Not A Class Act - American Express Card

By: pared

What company would call a consumer on her cell phone on Easter Sunday to inform the consumer that her credit limit was being drastically reduced? Not any company with class. I am not talking about a deadbeat customer; I am talking about a long-time American Express cardholder with an excellent credit rating. Because of this unconscionable action by American Express, this consumer will now see her credit score lowered through no fault of her own.

There ought to be a law against this and I will be forming a grassroots organization to deal with this. God bless America where we can stand up for our rights.

AMEX Blue Cancelled for no good reason

By: TDLoyd

I applied and was approved for an AMEX Blue card in Aug 2008. Today, April 2009, I received a letter stating the account was terminated. The letter described several 'credit issues' that came up during my account review. I called them and explained that the only negative thing in my credit report is from 5 years ago I was late on two payments due to temporary unemployment, and that since acquiring my AMEX card my credit score has not changed (in fact I substantially reduced my debt during that time-frame).

They were neither friendly nor understanding.

I am extremely disappointed with the service I received and I sincerely hope that they can calculate the total actualized lifetime value of me being a cardholder and weigh that against the risk of a cardholder that has a decent credit score with 0 delinquent accounts.

Ridiculous Customer Service

By: Mel Fra

I recently received a Skymiles card and made 2 very small purchases. Then I was asked to call to verify my identity to protect against identity theft. The only way to do this is get my bank on the phone. I hold and some woman comes on the line claiming to be from my bank and she won't give any information without getting my account number information - with the American Express representative on the phone! I'm not giving some account representative all of my banking information.

If I don't do that, I have to jump through hoops with bank notarized affidavits to prove who I am. Funny since I've had a Costco AmEx card for years and American Express knows perfectly well who I am. Did they need the bank account information to keep on file for future use? And if they are so interested in identity theft, why would they want my bank account info flying all over those recorded conversations. Very simple minded and absolutely no real customer service. I will never have a good thing to say about the rude customer service reps either. It wasn't a process to protect against identity theft.

It was AmEx crap. Funny, if they don't know who I am - who pays the bill on the Costco card monthly??????????

Canceling Cards Without Reason

By: tdulaney

I have an Amex card and I went on line to check my account and it said my account had been cancelled for no reason. I tried calling them but was just put on hold then I tried emailing them and it will not go thru. I have paid this account off every time I used it. Never had an outstanding balance, never paid late. It made no sense to me.

Has anyone else had this problem with them? I thought they were a good company to have a credit card with.

American Express Blue Nightmare

By: donnajportland

American Express has upped my rate from 3.9% to 27.24% for being 6 days late.
The horrid person on the other end of the phone actually promised to ruin my credit if I did not pay it....

PLEASE BE FORE-WARNED/ADVISED THIS COMPANY IS HORRIBLE TO DEAL WITH!!

My Amex Blue And Clear Cards Canceled For No Reason!

By: KeeferD420

I have had 2 American Express cards (a Blue and a Clear) for 3+ years. On 3/23, I paid off both balances in full. Yesterday I received a letter from American Express dated 4/6/09 stating that they have cancelled BOTH accounts. There was no contact information listed on the letter, so I went online to find the customer service #.

When I called, I spoke with a woman and asked why they cancelled my accounts and she said (via a script) "This is a business decision and we feel comfortable in regards to this account." I asked again, why would they cancel an account that has been paid in full on both cards, with no notice, and she said (verbatim) "This is a business decision and we feel comfortable in regards to this account." I said "Well this is a terrible way to treat a loyal customer in a time such as these economic times, especially after all the Federal Bailouts, paid with my taxpayer dollars." She said "This is a business decision and we feel comfortable in regards to this account."

I will NEVER do business again with American Express - they way they treat their customers is HARDLY American.

American Express Lowered My Limit - CC Limit

By: Pmo52

I have read many reviews about American Express, last night I got the call, the young lady on the other end informed me that they were lowering my credit line from 4500 to 1700, 100.00 over my balance. I asked for an explanation, and she told me I had negatives, it went down hill from there. I have an 800 credit score, pay 3 times the min payment, no negs, no lates, nothing.

I challenged her as she told me that my credit report was showed these so called negs, I pull my credit report while I had her on the line, ZIP, nothing, she out and out lied. I told her if she wanted to reduce it because the company is about to go bankrupt, at least have the balls to just say it, and not lie, or use me as their scape goat.

American Express, along with all credit card companies are making us pay because they *** up all these years handing credit out like it was candy. I hope the hole industry bites it!!

They Did It To Me - Again!

By: FedUpwithAMEX

I have had an AMEX Delta Skymiles card for several years now. Up until recently, they constantly increased my credit limits because of my good credit and STERLING payment record. My limit was $30,000, but I never charged anywhere near that.

In the past six months, they have notified me at least 4 times, most recently today, that they are lowering my credit limit, always to about $100.00 more than I owe.

I pay it down, they lower it again. Finally I just sent them a big wad of money. They left me alone for awhile - then - Voila! I go on a trip, charge the $400.00 hotel bill to AMEX and I get the call the moment I get home that they are lowing my limit another $10,000 (!!!!!) to $200.00 above what I currently owe. There is NO reason for this. I think this is absolutely criminal. I pulled up my credit report and see that they (Amex)haven't reported my history for almost ONE YEAR. However, my score is still above 750.

I know people who would kill for that kind of credit rating. I HATE AMEX!!!!!!!

They Canceled And Took My Reward Points

By: Janharris56

I received the cancellation notice the other day after paying the card off, and making on time monthly payments. I went online to use my reward points only to find they are not available anymore and to send an inquiry, that part of their website wouldn't work for me.

Is this the way it works? Is there anyway of getting the rewards back, I wanted to get the gift cards?

Amex/Experian - Credit Cards

By: sokrfan

4/18/20009 pm, I get a call from Amex (recording) my credit limit is being reduced big time. There goes my credit capacity/credit score. THANKS A LOT AMEX.

Now 4/20, I call Amex to find out why. They tell me that from the summary report they received from EXPERIAN, that it had negative things on it.

That I have a lot of inquiries and have opened lots of accounts. I still have to deal with Experian about this information, but my bigger concern is:

My Amex has been opened for years (YEARS) why is Experian sending them information now!!!? Why is AMEX requesting information!!!? My account is in perfect order, no late payments, no over limit, NOTHING.

I think they are in cahoots with each other also to stick it to the American people.
I am all for starting a group to stop these deceitful practices.

Getting sick of being stepped on.

Canceled Both My Accounts!!!

By: lcavey

So about a month ago I got a letter in the mail stating they were reducing my credit limit on my blue cash account from 10k to 3k due to my bad credit with EXPERIAN!! I don't have bad credit according to EXPERIAN!! I challenged them on the phone and they hung up on me!!

Then yesterday I tried to use my Blue Cash card and it was denied at the grocery store..

So I go home and call AE and they say they have CANCELED BOTH my credit cards (blue and blue cash) that I have had for 10 years!! Because of my bad credit with EXPERIAN!! So I pulled up EXPERIAN and challenged the supervisor and said I have my credit report up in front of me and I have a credit score of 730 so how can that be bad credit?? She said the decision was final and that there was nothing she could do.

In the 10 years with BOTH accounts I never had a late payment nothing AND the last two years I pay the account off in FULL every month!!

I am taking this to the banking commission as well as the Treasury.

This is out right false and inaccurate information.

There needs to be a class action lawsuit!

American Express Is Simply Full Of It

By: ourtoy

I am over it with Amex. They have reduced my limit from 3400 to 1700. They say it's because I have had some negatives on my credit report. Of course I argued with them stating I have never been late with you for the last 13 years. They also gave me a limit on my green card of 1000. I am ready to file a law suit. If anyone knows how to start the process, please let me know. Enough is enough!!!

IRS Income Verification Request

By: azgranny

I also have been an AMEX cardholder since 1995. They have always been the most difficult credit card company to deal with. Now they want me to sign the release for them to access my 2007 and 2008 tax returns to "verify" income. Paid the account in full last month and now the request for verification. What a reward for being a good customer with an 840 credit score. It is such an insult to good customers. I'm all in for a class action.

Does anyone actually give them access to tax returns???? Are any other credit card companies doing this??

Amex Is Horrible - Credit Cards

By: Mau

I have been a card holder of the Clear and Blue AMEX cards for over a year. Always paid more than the minimum due and never late. They recently started lowering my limit from $5,000 to $1500. and the other to $500. Without warning. The other day I went to schedule a payment and the cards were cancelled by AMEX. I have not received a written letter that they were yet and a acceptable reason.

Please help with this horrible thing they are doing to all customers.... They should go under.

Canceled Credit Card - American Express Gold Card

By: bendabob

I have had my gold card for 5 years. I have never been late on a payment, and pay it off fully every two weeks. I went to use my card yesterday and it declined. I figured this was an error done by the cashier and paid on my other credit card. I called AMEX to make sure and while waiting, the automated voice said no current balance due, no new charges.

I had just paid it off. I got through to a live person, and he simply stated that my card was canceled due to AMX running my credit. He could offer no other explanations except there was a letter sent out yesterday saying my credit card was canceled. I believe this is unacceptable and loyalty and good track records of payments have no bearing on decisions.

I can tell you I was very happy with the service provided, but will never use your services again. I have 3 other credit card and will now use those that appreciate my money and loyalty.

Out Of The Blue - Credit Card Cancellation

By: braintwist12

I recently paid of my American Express Blue card in full. ($2500) I had spent some time paying off other debts first but this was the last to go. I was feeling good about finally being debt free and having a decent line of credit to start using on a regular basis. I was also looking forward to suing those rewards point that I acquired.

(6300) So I go to use my card knowing that I have a nice cushion of 2600 and it is declined. Figuring it must be a mistake I check by phone and everything was cool. On-line my account is paid. So I try to use it once more. NO DICE! So I called the customer service line and found that my account had been canceled. I asked if it was some kind of mistake and they told me they sent me a letter informing my why. Since I didn't get the letter they told me over the phone that they checked my credit and saw that I had too much debt for the about of credit available.

Well I guess that is what happens when you only have a few credit cards and then get financed to BUY a new car! I get approved for a car loan, pay off all my credit cards, and they think it is in their best interest to close my account! I would think that faithful making on time payments for all my accounts for two years would show some kind of responsibility. I guess they don't want money. I can't believe that they would do such a thing. I would have at least wanted some notice. They have my number they could have called, or I guess they didn't give a crap. Credit card companies only call when they want to hassle some who is down like a big financial bully. Well I am done with them I just wish I had spent my 6300 rewards point before they stole them from me!

I think we all know the big corporations like this have gotten way out of control. Lets hope the snazzy congress of ours can finally come up with some legislation that will put the power back in the hands of the consumers!

The Decline of American Express - Class Action Suit

By: JLD2

Like so many other Amex clients we have suffered from their Gestapo type policies. This once prestigious credit card company has gone to trash. Our company has the highest D&B rating possible and my personal credit score is 801 and yet we have been harassed by phone calls and idiotic letters from Amex. For twenty years we have used their service and have never failed to pay our balance completely each month and always on time. It seems to us that Amex is shooting itself in the foot.

Should anyone know of a class action law suit against this firm pertaining to the above, please let us know so that we can join up also.

Stressed Out - American Express Sucks

By: derbycity

I have two Gold Cards and One Blue, My typical monthly purchase between the gold cards are $25000.00 with hi months of $55.00 and they are always paid ON TIME. October 08 we get an letter cutting our credit to 21-K TOTAL "Current charges and Due Charges" which will equal approx $10500.00 available per month WTF!, been with them 20 Years.

March, an email lowering our available credit "Which I thought had no limit" to approx $500.00 over our current balance WTF!, 4/28/ lowered again! We use and have depended upon this company for our daily lifestyle and paid promptly monthly and now this. I AM DONE, I will not let a company which I was proud to be a part of pull my financial chain at there whim. Cancelled taking Amex at my company and have opened a CASH debit account thru my bank.

It's been tough to double up cash reserves the past few months but it does feel nice to no longer depend upon Amex. Guys, do the same, it does feel nice!

Same Experience As Most On Here. We Need To File Class Action Suit

By: mbyrnes

I have had a similar experience to many of yours on this site. The only difference is that I was a new customer of American Express. I got my Gold Rewards Plus card in Jan. and they told me that there was no spending limit on the card. I figured that meant that they would review a purchase only if it was inconsistent with amounts previously spent.

I found out I was wrong when, after a month of having the card and making the only payment necessary, I was declined on a $4 purchase. When I called AMEX they said that my account was under financial review. I could not figure out why since they had just approved me a month earlier based on my credit report, but I bent over backwards and sent my financials to them.

That helped to clear my card for about a week or two until they declined me again. This time I call and the lady informs me that the no spending limit card has a limit of (laughable) $500 dollars! I could have got approved for a college credit card and got a larger spending limit then that.

I decided to just quit using the card because I did not need the credit anyways, I was just trying to use it for necessities to build some reward points.

About a month later after I had made all three payments (550, 989, and 454 dollars respectively) way before the due dates I logged into my AMEX account to find out they canceled my card!

They told me, like others of you, that according to Experian my credit score had dropped. I pulled my credit report and there was no change and no new derogatory items in 2 years! I called AMEX and the first lady was so rude and defensive and almost hung up on me! I finally got a supervisor who told me that I had to send the Experian report over so they could match it up to what they had. I told her I was not going to waste my time or hers because I could tell they had already made their minds up.

All throughout the process not one representative even came close to apologizing! What ever happened to customer service? I would encourage all of you on here to report AMEX's behavior to your government officials and also I think that we should get a class action started.

Cancelled Without Notice Or Provocation

By: winstonboy

I have had at least one American Express card since 1969. At times I had as many as three. I have literally charged millions of dollars over the years and have never missed a payment. Last week, I got a notice that the credit limit on one of my cards was cut to $1,000. Then, this week I got a letter informing me that both my cards were cancelled because of a negative credit report.

It is true that my credit score has gone down recently, because I made the mistake of signing as a co-obliger on my son's mortgage, which he has had difficulty keeping up with. After making several payments for him, I decided enough was enough and told him he was on his own. He has his own business and makes enough to maintain most people's lifestyles.

Amex has a right to cancel anyone's card, but to do it to a cardholder of forty years, without any notice, is unconscionable, especially since I have never missed a payment and have liquid assets of over $1,000,000. When I called to complain, I got the standard answer. This from a company that brags about their customer service. Shameful.

Unfair Policies - Credit Card Services

By: suba

American express canceled my credit card/Costco card without a valid reason.
I feel it is time for me to let go it anyway because it is the least trustworthy and least customer friendly credit card company.

I am sure with all the inconveniences Costco customers are going through, your days with the Costco can be counted so will be the days of your future.
Remember no average shop like your card

American Express Cancelled Me - Credit Card

By: CLezama

I received an unsigned letter from American Express stating that my credit card had been cancelled. It seems I am not worthy of holding an American Express credit card because I was 15 days late with my payment to a department store. Yet, incredibly, the department store still values my business. I called Amex and of course, they read me the same scripted answer that so many in my situation have heard.

I asked for a supervisor and he too attempted to read the same script. All I wanted was an address to write to because their gracious letter of cancellation gave no contact information. I only got an Amex because I finally gave in to their countless offers...BIG MISTAKE. And, as if the economy wasn't bad enough and all of us making an honest living aren't working hard enough, Amex will now add their unfounded cancellation to my credit report. Of course! Why not kick us while we're down? Makes sense, right?

Make Sure To Get You Rewards Points If They Cancel Your Account!

By: hejsan

American Express canceled my Rewards Plus account a couple of weeks ago and seemingly zapped out my 51,000 rewards points (51,000 Delta miles or other possible rewards). I was really bummed until I read the following:

American Express Changes Membership Rewards Policy

American Express has announced a policy change regarding its Membership Rewards program.

The policy change permits a cardholder that is in good standing at the time that his card is cancelled to redeem his Membership Rewards points for up to 90 days following the cancellation of his card.

American Express did not define what the term good standing meant, but did state the change in policy was due to its recent decision to cancel the cards of members who were current on their payments but that were considered to be a credit risk.

Before this policy change, if an American Express card was cancelled for any reason, the Membership Reward points were lost.

American Express also announced its intention to honor cash-rebate cards.

If the customer has an outstanding balance on his account, then the cash-rebate will be applied to the balance.

If the balance is less than the cash-rebate, American Express will issue a check for the balance to the customer.

Finally, American Express said customers who had their cards canceled recently, but before the policy change, can contact American Express Membership Rewards customer service for a case by case decision on whether the customer will be permitted to redeem the points.

I called and they instantly credited my Delta Sky Miles account for 51,000 miles. So I'm satisfied - They can give or deny credit to me - it's their money - but they can't take away points/miles I've already earned.

That would be plain wrong. I'll take the miles and take my business elsewhere.

I just wanted to make sure anyone e4lse who has this happen makes sure to claim their miles with the rewards program asap!

Cancelled Without Notice - Gold Card

By: urgh

After 6 years of good standing w/ American Express, my card got cancelled without notice with all my rewards cancelled! I've read that others have experienced the same problem... I would join a lawsuit class action against American Express anytime!

American Express cut down my credit limit

By: Ari K

I have been with AX since 1997 never missed a payment but yet they have lowered my line of credit twice in the last 6 months. This has affected my FICO score. The Glory and the service AX once had is gone. It has become the worst credit card company. They don't give a crap for their customers. After speaking with them three times there was nothing they could do. I'm sure they will lose a lot of people don'nt be surprised if they will go under before the end of 2009. They are number one company in defaults. They have also received 5Billion in Government Aid (tax dollars) so go figure. Bottom line, I will NEVER use them again.

In 2009, AMEX Hates Small Businesses and Independent Business People

By: AMEXBS

My own story is simple, a small business member since 1994, pay on-time, credit availability between three cards of $55,000 and then the games start from AMEX in 2008.

1) Phone calls from AMEX asking me to pay my bill before the due date.

2) With great credit, AMEX starts their "GAME" of lowering limits 1 or more times per month resulting in a) denied business and personal transactions, and b)reducing my credit score.

3) When talking with AMEX's CSR's they state my credit profile has changed.

Yes, they are right, they changed it by consistently reducing my credit levels.

4) In frustration, I call AMEX and cancel the Blue card. What a mistake, my credit report gets whacked again.

Fast forward to 2009.

5) More monthly calls from AMEX asking me to pay before due dates and more reductions in credit limits without any notification or telephone discussion. Also the CSR's state that if I pay immediately then they will make sure I have charging privileges in the future and that if I do not "make a pay by phone" I will have my cards locked.

6) Low Credit limits and lower credit scores for my small business.

7) Insult to injury - An irate AMEX CSR calls my cell phone on a Saturday AM an threatens me to pay the small amount I owe right now or else he will cancel my accounts without me knowing it.

April 2009

8) Discover low and behold that they cancelled the accounts, locked up/eliminated my hundreds of thousands of membership rewards points.

So now I am not motivated to pay them. QUite frankly I will pay the paltry sum and move on but this firm is evil, lies to its customers, treats its customers poorly at every opportunity and is an embarrasssment to its shareholders, bondholders, customers and the United States.

I hope there is a class action lawsuit soon that sues for damages caused by their "Games."

Class Action Suit Here We Come

By: jaybirdy

Well, here I am another victim of American Express. I have been a cardholder in one form or another for over 30 years. Yesterday my Costco American Express card was cancelled. This was the only American Express Card I had left. I only got it because Costco was touting 3% back if I got the card. I have had it for over 2 years.

It has always been paid in full at the end of the month.

Their reasoning was that I had too many delinquent payments to other companies and didn't pay enough monthly on my balances. I only have 2 VISA accounts, have never been delinquent, always pay a substantial amount over the minimum and have over 800 credit rating.

Also, I did not like the paragraph in their letter that stated this may affect my credit rating and that if I had any late payments to them, they would refer the account to a collection agency. I would like to know how I would have a balance to refer anywhere when the card is cancelled.

I also called Costco to let them know they should disassociate themselves from American Express as they are sullying their reputation.

Anyone out there an attorney? I am ready for a class action suit.

I never write letters like this, but I am spitting nails as I am so mad.

American Express Sucks

By: uechiwoman

I have had American Express for many years. I ALWAYS pay my full balance each month. I have NEVER been late. They just cancelled my account because they saw one negative remark on my credit report last month that is in error. I lost all of my sky miles. I tried using them before but with all the restrictions it's impossible to find a flight! I spoke to the "supervisor" who only repeated the same lame remarks as the boy who answered originally.

My family income is close to SEVEN figures! I only used this card at Costco!! These people must read from a script because I got nowhere with them!

I am correcting the mistake on my credit report and I will NEVER accept another AMEX card again. I also have a business and I will stop taking AMEX in the future.
AMEX is a rip off. Their "customer service" is a sham! They don't give a crap about their customers! IDIOTS!!

AmEx fails to consider profitability and lifetime value - Credit Card

By: BWF

Here is the letter I sent to a reporter who had an article about American Express' bizarre credit decisions. In addition, I just received a letter that the cancellation could have a negative impact on my credit report. How can that be when I have always been an excellent customer for them? I would happily join in a class action lawsuit.

Sign me up.

Hi David,

Thank you for the article on American Express. My card was canceled today. I am baffled. I have been a member for 7 years, during which time, they started me at $500 credit line. They quickly moved me to $5,000 and then $10,000 where I have been for the past 7 years. I typically run about $5,000 to $10,000 per month on it paying it in full all the time. I never had a late payment or any issue with them. They were definitely my favorite card to work with.

In November of 08, they cut me to 5k with no warning saying that they check credit reports monthly. Then in December, they cut me to $500. Of course, both cuts were when I had paid the balance down, so in essence, they took operating capital from my small business. Loosing the $10,000 of operating room in a 60 day period hurt pretty bad. Then I lived with the frustration of a $500 line. I would have closed it myself, except that I have become dependent on the Hilton Honors points as a part of my business travel budget. I was having to really work it to get the $500 credit line to work with the $20k I needed to keep gold point status. I began paying it off every other day and then using it in smaller chunks. I had several conversations with the reps saying that $500 didn't get me through a weekend of travel or even allow me to book most air tickets.

Then yesterday, they canceled me completely. Again, I asked them why. Since I had checked my credit report in December when they did the first cuts, I had a comparison base.

When I checked it today, my outstanding overall debt had gone down by about $8k in the past 4 months. My credit score had increased 70 points. There were no marks against me except I accidentally went $2 over my credit limit on my smallest visa card this month and quickly got it back below the limit (I had paid it in full at the beginning of the monthly cycle), so I had a possible negative alert that I had gone $2 over a limit for a few days on a different card. That was the only thing I saw that might have triggered their models.

I have some inside insight as I used to build credit and marketing models for USAA and Bank of America. I truly think some JUNIOR analyst at Amex has built a very short sighted and limited scope credit model. The big question is, why is American Express management not seeing that it will run them into the ground very quickly? I found another article that said that their Q1 profit was down 56%. I had a perfect payment history running between 5k and 10k a month through their system at a 4.5% merchant fee per transaction. Did they really think I was at risk of missing a $15 a month minimum payment? That is $180 per year. I made an online or phone payment several times a week of whatever they would let me pay when they dropped me to $500 (trying to maintain my $20,000 per year gold point status means I had to pay off the $500 40 times in a year) .

It would have been virtually impossible for me to miss the $15 monthly minimum payment. And when they dropped me to $500, how big was their risk? Are they cutting risk, or destroying their profit base? I vote for the later. I am 41 and WAS a very loyal Amex customer with decades of high dollar spending left in me.

American Express "Open Minded And Relevant?" May 2009 Way Too Funny!

By: AMEXBS

This just in, on online and print edition of btobonline May 4, 2009 issue. AMEX's VP of Brand Strategy in article "American Express Shinder on marketing to small business."

The VP's comments:

"American Express OPEN is dedicated to helping the business unit's small-business customers survive and thrive during the recession."

"Our key focus in 2009 is on the OPEN charge card [which is pay-in-full, not revolving with APR's] is the right tool for business owners during these times."

"We aim to deliver on this commitment through things big and small - from designing relevant products and services for business, to curating outstanding content to provide business owners with practical advice and insights available through the OPEN Forum."

"We are continuing to invest in OPENForum were hearing more than ever that our business customers are seeking advice about what they can do differently to survive than thrive in a challenging economy.

So I have two simple questions for her.

1) Is she so ignorant of her company's bad business and customer relations practices or is she spreading BS to help prop-up her fleeing customer bases and investor sentiment?

2) Does she really think that small businesses are interested in paying for business advice from AMEX when AMEX is harming small businesses?

You Decide?

Is AMEX lying to itself or in deep denial?

Interest Rate Increase

By: rtaylor837

I would like to inform other who have the AX card to watch their interest rates monthly as I did this month. I have been with AX approx:10 or 11 years and to the best of my knowledge I have never been late. However AX decided to raise my interest rate from 9.99% up to 15.99% so this morning myself along with my wife and her separate account which also has never been late decided to cancel our cards.

And as no surprise to me AX really did not care. Well I also do not care and I'm happy that the card is closed and I or my wife will never own an AX card again. We also are informing everyone we know how AX treats customers that always pay there bills on time. Thank you for this chance to express my feeling on this subject. PS. My credit score is excellent and I just ref. my mortgage this month to 4.5%. So I guess my question is why can AX increase the card without any problem.

Oh I forgot our Politicians allow this type of things because of lobbiest will guess what I and my whole family vote and unless you change thing like this you may just be looking for another Job yourself.

American Express Does Nothing To Ensure They Are Talking To The Account Holder

By: vslacks

So, today my wife went to withdraw money from our bank account and noticed to her surprise that we were over $4000 overdrawn. We then went online to check our account and noticed that there was a large pending payment to our American Express card. We checked the Amex account online and saw the same payment listed there.

But neither my wife nor I had authorized this payment. So we called American Express...

1. The first person my wife talks to at Amex says that she'll have to open a billing inquiry and it could take up to six weeks to resolve. My wife said that was unacceptable and asked to speak to a supervisor.

2. The supervisor said that they called a number (they wouldn't even tell us what number) associated with our account and that the person they spoke with authorized the payment. My wife said that neither of us had spoken to anyone and the supervisor said that he would pull the tape of the call and would call us back within the hour.

3. The customer service representative (not the supervisor) who called us back said that they had reviewed the call and related the transcript to us. It's important to understand that my wife has an unusual first name that someone could take for being either a male or female name:

Amex Rep: Is this ?
Man at unknown phone number: "Yes, this is .
Amex Rep: Do you authorize a payment of $XXXX on your account?
Man: "Yes, you can take the money out of my bank account."
Amex Rep: Would that be the account ending in xxxx?
Man: Yes, that's the account.

Based on this crack display of identity verification, Amex says they would not be refunding the money. We said we would be putting a stop payment on the transaction and would be contacting a lawyer and the media.

So, apparently if you have a phone number that used to belong to an Amex account holder and Amex calls you asking for payment, all that is required to authorize money be removed from that person's bank account is to say "yes, that's me" and "yes, that's my account".

No verification of social security number. No asking what the last four digits of the bank account is. No "what's your mother's maiden name".

My wife and I are outraged. It is unbelievable that Amex makes no attempt to verify that they are talking to the right person. Heck they could have even called our home phone number and if someone else (a babysitter, a mother--in-law, etc.) answered, all they would have to do is pretend to be one of us and they could authorize a payment!

AMEX Deliberately destroys your credit and attacks your business

By: plumbshocked

I had 2 AMEX Blue accounts for 2 different businesses with credit lines of 55,000, and 13,000. I always paid the balance in full for the the 55,000 card. The card with 13,000 had a balance of $5,000 from a balance transfer offer with a very low interest rate and I paid the minimum, never late. Without warning, AMEX dropped the 50,000 limit to 11,000 (that month's purchases).

When I paid the 11,000, the limit was dropped to 1,000 (for a card with monthly purchases of 6,000 to 28,000 and used by 8 employees in purchasing). The other card was dropped to the balance. This hurt my company and disrupted my operations. When the going got tough, my "business partner", AMEX, ran and left. My charges on those cards over the last 8 years were $985,000 (all paid in full each month). As a responsible business owner, I need credit issuers that stand by me in hard times and base their decisions on my payment history, not some knee jerk corporate risk assessment. Since this happened, I have stopped taking AMEX in my operations. I only take VISA, MC and Discover.

I urge you to do the same. It is us small business owners who accept AMEX cards and pay the higher AMEX premium. I will remember this disloyalty forever.

Wish there was a Class Action Suit, 25 Years, Gold Card, Joke!

By: Boscoreo

I have been a loyal American Express member since 1984. I have used the card for years for business purposes and have never missed a payment. Last week, I was checking into a hotel and was informed that my card was cancelled. As I had never been late with a payment and knew the card was current, I was sure that it had to be some fixable error.

I called AMEX to get it straightened out. The exact opposite happened; the non-English speaking representative confirmed that indeed my card had been canceled because of a negative credit report.

Since 2005, when Hurricane Katrina wiped out my business and finances, my credit score has suffered. I have always made sure that I was current on my American Express bill, as I would need that card to help rebuild my future after the devastation of the hurricane. My score right now is the best that it has been in 4 years.
The big question is what my loyalty has cost me. I hope there is a class action lawsuit soon that sues for damages caused by their neglect of loyal customers.

American Express Credit Card

By: crown100

I have had an American Express Credit Card for over 20 years. They cancelled my card on May 7. I found this out since I went to get my tank filled. I use my card for over $30,000 a year in charges. I always pay on time.

This is very bold of them to do this. I could have been with clients offering to pay for lunch or dinner.

I could have been extremely embarrassed since I do not carry any other cards with me.

This is very irresponsible on their part. They told me on the phone that they cancelled my card on May 7th and that the letter from American Express cancelling my card was mailed on May 8th.

I have already secured another card and will never - ever deal with American Express again.

They ask in every telephone call if I been treated Ok and if I have any other questions - but haven't they done enough ? So many people depend on the card to be usable when they want it to be and if it is to be cancelled then they should send a certified letter so the card holder knows in advance. This would have been the only "right thing" to do.

CUT UP YOU AMERICAN EXPRESS CARDS. You could be next!!!

Incompetent Customer Valuation - Credit Card

By: Fr. Steve

My wife receive a cancellation notice of the American Express Platinum card she has held for decades. The notice asserted late payments, inadequate monthly payments, and income and assets are not substantial enough for the debt carried. This to a woman who regularly pays off the whole debt, has never paid as little as a minimum payment, has assets that place her in the top ranks of wealth and enjoys a substantial monthly income. A phone call to AmX ended in a rock hard dead end. What incompetent, bureaucratic stupidity is this? They have enough problems without alienating the few good customers they have left.

Seriously, Can This Be Legal? - Credit Card

By: Valrus

We have been a customer of Amex since 2005. It seems reading through comments, the story is all to common. We are a small business owner and carry a personal and business Amex card. We started getting our credit limit lower back in 2008 on business card, then 2/2009 the personal was lowered from $6500 to $5400.

What took the cake was 4/2009 the lowering from $5400 to $4100. I was irate! The customer service with this company is down right ridiculous, a joke to say the least. Last week a CSR advised that no where could she find a reason why this happened and that it would be reviewed by CSR supervisor, they would get back within 3 days. Never heard back from Amex. I called 5/11/2009 and was on hold, pass to numerous departments of Amex. All departments agreed this shouldn't have happened. I was told that they don't see the credit limit was ever lower on either account, that it was always the lowered amount.

Again the CSR would get with (this time) a manager, then get back with me in 3 days. The next day I received my statement showing my personal limit at $5400. Now I have always been advised that the decisions to make changes on accounts occur before a new statement cuts. I called back on 5/12/2009 to hear my account was reviewed and the reason for the lowered credit limit was due to high balances on other credit cards, etc. How all of a sudden was the reason available? My credit is good and all my accounts are paid on time and paid beyond the minimum due. Amex is our enemy and in this economy who needs them lowering credit scores across the board for consumers and small business owners.

Something needs to be done to put this to an end! Isn't it Ellen who does commercials for Amex? Maybe she would be interested to know how Amex treats their paying customers?

American Express is Horrible - Credit Cards

By: Bacall

I have also been "run over" by American Express. As a matter of fact, my small business has. I have faxed letters to the Senate Committee on Small Business, Chris Dodd, and Barney Frank as well as my congressional delegation. All of you who had issues, take the time to write to Congress. We must put an end to AMEX

Amex/costco rip-off

By: amberfro

After paying off a substantial portion of our Amex/Costco card balance. We received a letter informing us that our card was cancelled! LIVID my husband called them to inquire their reasoning behind the decision. With no late payments and us recently paying off most of our credit card balances (to improve our credit score, mind you) we were told that if we renewed our membership with Costco that our account could likely be reinstated!! I cannot believe that they CANCEL and seriously affect peoples credit scores to bully them into renewing their Costco memberships! What a bunch of corporate, nazi B. S!!!!!

Can't get Late Fees off of My Bill - Added late fees

By: Harrison

My statement shows late fees for 3 consecutive months. I called to find out what they were for. I was late one day and so I am charged late fees for 2 months following.
Where in their disclosures does it state that?
If I cancel my card I lose my points earned.

What to do?

Amex continues to screw good customers

By: azgranny

Well they did it. After refusing to give Amex access to my tax returns, they "cancelled" my account and informed me it "May" affect my credit report negatively because of my failure to cooperate with their request. NICE. Wonder how much. Had a 840 score.

Cutback on Credit Limit for No Reason-and a BS letter to boot

By: ReInk

I was shocked to receive an email that our company American Express card limit had been cut to $1000 above the balance. I tried customer service; they said the explanation was in the mail - but it actually was sent out after my call. The stated reasons were: my "total debt with American Express and other creditors" (almost all mortgage debt), credit score and records that had not changed since 2005.

I've been told there is nobody who has both responsibility and decision making authority and referenced to write to Doria M. Camaraza, Senior VP Operations, 777 American Express Way, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33337.

It is not fair - credit line decrease

By: mvigi

I feel better reading about other people, American express has no loyalty for their customers, they lower the credit limit, what about the yearly fee? why we have to paid for a yearly fee when other people has a higher credit limit, their yearly fee is $150.00 for a corporate card, we need to take them to court, lets keep writing and complaining and just don't give up, please write to the President that is what I'm doing lets complaint very loud...

APR increases on Life of Balance balances - Blue Card

By: VIC2

I was fortunate to obtain a American Express Blue Card with a Life of Balance APR of 9.99%. I was also offered in the next year a 6.9% APR Life of Balance.

I paid the BT Balance off and continued to use my card on the 9.99% APR LOB. But I had to continually call AMEX to reverse the increases in my APR back to the 9.99% rate.

Last November I found they boosted my APR to 17.49%. After I called they reduced it back to 9.99%, Jan 2009 they sent out "new cardmember agreements" stating the APR will be 12.99%. I have always paid the balance due on time or early. I thought life of balance meant life of balance. They boosted the entire balance to 12.99% instead of honoring their agreement for LOB. I could understand the new APR for new charges, but I can see now they are in survival mode. On top of doing this to me and probably thousands of others, they are laying off another 4,000 employees after just getting done laying off 7,000. If anyone knows of a class action suit I can get involved in regarding LOB APR changes, let me know. In the meantime, if you have any stocks purchased from AMEX, beware. They are acting scared. The actions they are taking to screw over cardmembers and employees will leave them with a very small cardmember base and not much room for profit for a very long time.

AMEX Knows How To Cover Their Asses - Travellers Checks

By: worldtraveller

In March of 2001 the Wyoming Highway Patrol seized about $10,000. worth of AMEX travellers checks from me. Subsequently they turned the checks over to the US Secret Service. The US Secret Service held the checks for three years until 2004. I was never charged with any criminal offence regarding these checks.
Rather than returning th checks to me in 2004 the US Secret Service returned the checks to American Express.

I have documentation (if you had a place to attach files I could display this) to support this allegation along with a letter from the Secret Service stating the checks sent to American Express belonged to me.

In 2006 I hired a Wyoming attorney named Timothy Kingston of Cheyenne,
Wyoming (307) 638-8885. He wrote letters to the legal department at AMEX demanding a refund for these checks being AMEX got my money and the checks back. I also have documents to support this. He even demanded AMEX show a factual or legal basis for denying me my refund. Never did an attorney respond. He only received emails from someone called Annette Holbrook (legal analyst). I checked with the Utah Bar and there was never an attorney practicing in that state by the name of Annette Holbrook. She said she was denying the claim unless I can produce a receipt or proof of purchase.

Unfortunately being it was five years since I purchased the checks I did not have the reaceipts. However requiring me to produce a proof of purchase before I could get a refund is such a farce. Number one AMEX has records. They know damn well who purchased those checks. For two the checks were held for three years with the US Secret Service. If those checks were not purchased by me clearly I would have had criminal charges filed against me. Three I have documentation
(if you only could allow me to paste documents here) where the US Secret Service clearly and unequivocally state that the checks in question belonged to me.

I purchased them on either February 20 or February 21 at the AAA Office on Arkansas Avenue in Denver, Colorado.

In 2007 my attorney filed a complaint against AMEX with the Office of the Attorney General of Utah. The Utah Attorney Generals Office dismissed the complaint because I am not a Utah resident.

I then upon my own filed a complaint in 2007 with the New York State Attorney General (where I am a resident). The complaint again was dismissed. In speaking with an attorney for the New York State Attorney Generals Office she said we can only resolve disputes if both parties are willing to do so voluntarily. Which is a joke. If the two parties can resolve the issue voluntarily why would one have to go to the attorney generals office.

Then in late 2008 I tried to file a complaint against AMEX with the Federal Trade Commission (The FTC).The FTC would not take the complaint because they say they only deal with class action suits. They referred me to the Office of Thrift Supervision.
In 2008 I filed a complaint against AMEX with the OTS (Office of Thrift Supervision) and they said that AMEX is a bank and that I should go to the FDIC. I went to the FDIC and they said AMEX is not a bank and that I should go to the FTC.

In 2009 I tried to contact an attorney for AMEX to discuss the refund and I get stonewalled. I first tried phoning the 1-800-221-7282 and I got someone from the Phillipines named Christian and he refused to connect me to an attorney for AMEX. I also phoned a Justin Peterson at AMEX in Salt Lake (1-801-945-5146)and he too refused to put me in contact with an in house attorney for AMEX.

It is rather obvious what AMEX is doing. They know how to cover their asses. They know the only way I would get justice from them is by sueing them. And for me to hire an attorney it would cost me more than the $10,000 I am out. I am trying to get the money back. Does anyone here know of any way that I can bring AMEX to justice, have them refund me my $10,000. without it costing me $10,000 to do so. Further there is now telling how many other times AMEX has done this.

American Express is hurting good customers

By: unfortunate

I have been an American express customer for over 5 years now. I have been a "valued customer", as they referred to me. I used my discover card to pay off my balance with American express. For over a month I did not make any purchases. A week ago, I received a letter from American Express informing me that my account was cancelled due to the high debts I carry.

I called them right away. The customer representative said that I had other debts, and they had to cancel my account. I told this perso that that was garbage because I PAID OFF my balance, and cancelling my account made no sense. They cancelled my account because I paid off the balance and did not purchase anything for a while. We need to let people know about the crimes that American Express is committing about good responsible customers.

Thank You.

Claudia

21 year customer - Gold Card

By: Maxson

I just closed my Amex. gold card after having it for 21 years. Use to charge all my day to day charges on the card, I have paid my bill on time and they put a $1600.00 limit on the card and want me to pay $75.00 a year for using the card. I just called them to remove the limit and they won't. They have just lost a good customer of 21 years and they don't care. Good luck AMEX you won't last much longer treating good customers like this.

Usury - Dinner

By: Omener

Although we paid our fees within twenty days of receiving the charge we were assessed a late fee which amounted to 20% of the outstanding bill. Such charges are totally unjustified.

We have always paid our fees on time in the ten years that we have had the card.

"Customer service" is a misnomer

By: 0007

I am writing to inform you of my recent experience with your business partner American Express. It is very sad to see Costco, the pinnacle of customer service and customer loyalty, partnering up with a company that has a corporate culture which has no respect for its customer base and considers them totally replaceable.

They do not understand the concept of customer service and have no insight to blatant flaws in their system processes.

Briefly

I changed my autopay banking info on line in a timely manner, clearly documented, however Amex continued to bill/debit my old bank account. The old bank account did not have sufficient funds so they immediately cancelled my card. No discussion with me, a 7 year old customer, credit score of 750+ who always pay his balance in full. I call to discuss and request reactivation, Impossible...automatic hold on card for 7 days, I request direct debits to the old account be stopped since I incur a $30 fee for each attempt since there was no money in that account. Impossible...I would have to pay those charges( my bank has no authority by Federal law to stop direct debits...they must be stopped by the sender!). I asked to pay off my AMEX account in full from the new bank account ...yes you guessed it ..Impossible!I was told I can only make a payment from the old account... I ask the logic behind that..."sir that is all I can offer you"

Three hours later I reached someone who would accept $5700 payment to bring a zero balance to my account. Unfortunately that still did not stop the two subsequent direct debits to my account and a total of $90 in insufficient fees charged by my old bank account.

I asked Amex customer service to to reimburse me for those charges... 5 hours later....Impossible. It was all my fault...I ask why was it my fault?

I obviously did not update Autopay in a timely fashion was the Amex reason.

I updated on April 19th 2009 which was well within the 4 days required prior to the future debit schedueled on MAy 5th 2009.

So now is it still my fault...even when I asked Amex to stop debits an May 7th...which would have saved at least $60 in bank fees.

Amex response was go to our bank... to which I asked...and what should I do when I go to the bank.

Amex response...We cannot advise you what to do..

I had my Amex card cancelled for a week which was a major inconvenience for my corporation, I was insulted by Amex customer "service" supervisors, I incurred $90 in bank fees despite doing everything I was supposed to do in a timely manner. AMEX also decided to charge me $38 in interest and late fees for good measure...why not he' s got the cash and we are hurting for it so screw him while we can....the AMEX motto I believe.

AMEX sucks big time. It is a disgrace that Costco has got into bed with these thieves. Your customers desrve better and Costco name should not be seen next to Amex.

Attached is a further sampling Amex customer relation experiences. I urge Costco to review this matter for its customer sake and renegotiate a credit facility with a corporation with a culture more aligned to Costco

I appreciate you taking the time to consider this experience
